What Are the Common Signs of Roof Wind Damage?

Many times, homeowners leave their roof alone until it starts experiencing problems. You should have your roof inspected regularly and after a weather event. Following a storm, your roof might look fine but many kinds of roof damage don’t show signs until serious repairs are necessary. Keep in mind that wind damage is common in residential and commercial roofing systems.

Read on to learn what the common signs of roof wind damage are.

What Causes Wind Damage?

High winds can be dangerous for different parts of your home. When it hits your roof, shingles can become loose or fall off. If the wind is strong enough, it can destroy even newly-installed roofs. Wind can also cause foreign objects and debris to land on your roof, like large tree branches and fallen powerlines.

The corners and the edges of the roof, as well as the ridgeline, are more prone to wind damage. Wind can penetrate under a corner or small portion of the shingle and curl or rip it. When the shingles fall off, leaks could develop in the exposed area. It’s the same when the shingles lift and the sealant between the layers get broken.

How Do You Know If Your Roof Has Wind Damage?

You’ll know if a commercial or residential roofing system is suffering from wind damage if there are leaks. In your attic, look for wet spots or water coming from the ceiling. If you see these signs, you should contact a professional immediately.

Curling and missing shingles are also indications of wind damage. Moreover, lifting shingles are hard to locate because they don’t look obvious from the ground. One more thing that could tell you if your roof is wind damaged is your gutters. A significant amount of roofing shingles in the gutters could be a sign of the issue as well.
