What Are the ABCs of Storm Roof Damage?

The roof is your home’s main line of defense against extreme weather events. While they are designed to protect you from harsh elements, they can still sustain damage from serious storms. Even if your roof appears fine, you should still get a professional roof inspection because some types of damage don’t show obvious signs.

Find out what the ABCs of storm roof damage are from a trusted residential and commercial roofing company.

Assess the Roofing Issue

For your safety, do not climb up your roof after a weather event. Debris on the roof as well as icy or wet spots can cause accidents. When the conditions are better, get a roof inspection from a professional. Getting your roof checked immediately can help you detect and address problems early. Moreover, you don’t need to go up on your roof to see if it has damage. Using binoculars, look for damaged or missing shingles. See if there are exposed areas of the roof and document the damage if possible.

Begin Temporary Repairs

You will need to perform temporary fixes if water is leaking into your living spaces. While waiting for your residential roofing contractor, place garbage cans or buckets under the leaks. Make sure to keep furniture or valuable items away from these leaks. To protect your belongings from damage, place a plastic cover over them.

Contact Your Property Insurer

Don’t wait too long before contacting your insurance provider if your roof has damage. Some insurance companies set deadlines until when you can file a claim. Moreover, be careful of the roofing companies you hire for inspections and repairs after storms. Only work with a local roofer who has proof of license and insurance. Doing some research, reading reviews, and asking for references goes a long way when avoiding storm chasers.
