The West Eugene Wetlands is a great place to take in the natural beauty of Oregon’s coast with its trails that wind through various habitats, all named after local bands or tribes who lived here centuries ago. The 0.5-mile Tsanchiifin walk trail follows an old Kalapuya Indian path from the west side of Danebo Avenue towards the north onto the Fern Ridge Bike Path.
Stewart Pond/Bertelsen Nature Park is a seasonal wetland that has been the site of many studies on waterfowl. It’s home to geese and ducks during the winter months when it rains regularly, but they’re not numerous during the summer because there isn’t enough rain then for them to breed here or feed their young with fish in this small body of water without shores, as we do every day at desks across our cityscape.
If you’re looking for a spot around Springfield to enjoy a picnic and some nature, head on over to the Meadowlark Prairie overlook. This spot has everything from covered picnic tables in case it rains or snows (though we hope none! ), all of which are located near restrooms, so there’ll never be any worries about getting caught outside when ill-equipped with snacks.
If you’re looking for a natural environment and want your dog along as well, West Eugene Wetlands is a great place to go! It has been open year-round so far, but there are some rules that apply. Dogs must be leashed (max 6 feet) at all times, except when they’re inside the parking lot and they can’t jump over barriers into flowing water.
Situated at 3106 Pierce Pkwy, Springfield, OR 97477-7909, the West Eugene Wetlands offer the chance to get up close and personal with nature in an area that’s usually bustling with city streets.
Though it might sound like a strange place to find a prairie, the West Eugene Wetlands are home to many amazing species of plants and animals. The wetland’s diverse environment provides an essential link in our ecosystem by providing habitat to wildlife that would otherwise be excluded from this dry region due to its lack of water sources such as streams and rivers. The unique type of grass-covered wetlands found here means there’s plenty more than just bird watching when you visit.
