Questions to Ask a Roofer Before You Hire Them

When you’re getting some work done on your roof, it’s always best that you hire someone to get the job done instead of attempting a DIY. That way, you can avoid costly mistakes and keep yourself safe at the same time. However, before you hire a person for the job, it’s also important that you vet them properly so you know that they’re as trustworthy and reliable as they say they are. One way to do this is by asking them a few questions.

In this article, Deschutes Roofing, one of the experts to turn to when installing a seamless gutter or a new roof, discusses the questions you should always ask a roofer before you hire them.

Are You Licensed and Insured?

When you’re hiring a roofer, one of the things that you should ask them is whether or not they’re licensed and insured and when you ask this question, the answer better be “yes”. This is because a license proves that they’re allowed to work in your state and that they know your local building codes, allowing you to avoid fines in the future. Insurance, on the other hand, frees you from responsibility if the roofer is injured while working on your property. With that in mind, if they answer “no” to this question, part ways with their company and find a different contractor to get the job done.

How Long Have You Been in Business?

Before you sign the dotted line that hires a contractor to handle the roofing repairs for your home, ask them how long they’ve been in the business. While there’s nothing wrong with hiring a roofing company that’s new to the business, it’s also recommended that you hire someone who’s been handling roofs for a long time if you’re dealing with a particularly difficult roof. As such, always make it a point to ask a roofer how long they’ve been in business so you can properly gauge their experience.

How Will You Protect My Property?

Not every roofer offers to lay down some protective measures when tearing off a roofing system and unfortunately, this can cause damage to your lawn. Therefore, before you hire a roofer to repair or replace your roof, try to negotiate with them to apply the proper measures to help you protect your property while the project is underway.
