K-Style Gutters and Why They’re a Popular Home Gutter Choice

As a homeowner, are you familiar with your gutters? If you’re planning a full gutter replacement, you’ll likely go for K-style gutters, as they’re the most common types installed in modern roofing systems. They’re highly popular as they provide excellent durability and longevity at a price that isn’t too expensive depending on the size of the roof. And because of this, K-style gutters have also been around in the industry for around 40 to 50 years.

To learn more about home gutters, trusted gutter and snow dam removal specialist Deschutes Roofing shares more insight:

A Quick History About Gutters and Gutter Styles

The earliest types of gutter systems were made from wood materials carved into different sizes and profiles. This means they were once made manually with basic tools, which can be a long and arduous process. However, the early 20th century brought several innovations in the gutter and roofing history, particularly with the invention of roll-forming machines. These machines made it easy to make gutters from metal materials, which were much more reliable than wood in many aspects.

It didn’t take long until metal gutters were introduced to the market and quickly replaced their wooden counterparts as one of the most popular materials available. K-style gutters weren’t invented yet, because, by the mid 20th century, half-round metal gutters were mostly installed in residential roofs. Half-round profiles were popular until the ‘70s when portable and lightweight rolling machines were created out of necessity and convenience. These machines created different types of profiles, including the K-style gutters we know today.

Popular K-Style Home Gutter Styles

K-style gutters come in many different sizes such as 5”, 6”, 7”, and 8”. However, most residential roofs that have this type of system are sized either 5” or 6”. They also come in different colors that can fit any home’s exterior and enhance its visual appeal. However, to ensure they catch the water runoff and redirect it safely down the drain, they must be installed by an experienced gutter installer and GAF roofer.

Popular Materials Used in K-Style Home Gutters

  • Galvalume – Compared to aluminum and copper gutters, galvalume gutters offer better durability against the natural elements. They’re made from steel coated with aluminum and zinc. The material is normally used for commercial properties such as warehouses, factories, and buildings.
  • Copper – This material is slightly more durable and aesthetically appealing than aluminum gutters. This is because copper gutters can give off a classic appeal that can make a roof stand out more.
  • Aluminum – This is one of the most popular choices for K-style gutters. It’s also one of the most affordable compared to other metal gutters as it’s lightweight and corrosion-resistant.
