Mold and algae can cause dark streaks on your roof, ruining its appearance and your home’s curb appeal. But because these two types of organisms look so similar, especially from the ground, it can be hard for an untrained eye to tell them apart. Oftentimes, people would be quick to assume that what they’re seeing is dirt or mold. In most cases, though, it could just be algae — which isn’t necessarily harmful to your shingles.
Although mold is less common than algae, it’s still better to err on the side of caution and have a professional roofer confirm the problem. It’s important to note that mold is not only capable of damaging your roof. It can cause health issues in your family too. From eye and throat irritation to asthma and other respiratory issues, these conditions can possibly be due to the presence of mold on your roof system. That said, look out for such allergic reactions or persistent health issues among your family members as those problems could be due to their exposure to mold.
Mold growth occurs on the roof when the attic is damp, warm and poorly ventilated. If you don’t see dark mold stains inside your home — especially in your attic, crawl spaces and basements — the discoloration on your roof is likely due to algae. But if you find similar stains in your indoor spaces, your GAF roofer would have to address the root cause of the problem and ensure molds won’t reappear after some time.
Asphalt shingles tend to be more prone to algae. Although algae doesn’t damage or eat away at your roofing, it can have a bad effect on your roof’s appearance — which is crucial if you have plans of selling your home. Obviously, a dark-stained roof won’t appeal to home buyers as much as a clean-looking roof.
