Importance of Underlayment to Your Roofing System

Roofing systems are made with different kinds of components that are crucial to their overall performance. Underlayment is a roofing component that is placed between the shingles and roof decking and provides certain functions and benefits to your roof.

To know more about roofing underlayment and its importance to your home, residential and metal roofing company Deschutes Roofing is here to provide you with helpful information.

Protection Against Moisture

One of the main functions of roofing underlayment is to provide a layer of protection to your roofing system. They are water-resistant or waterproof, depending on the material used. Think of them as a final protective membrane that protects your roof decking from being penetrated by moisture. Roofing underlayment helps prevent leaks and other damage caused by water and other outdoor elements. It is vital to extend the service life of your roof.

Types of New Underlayment

There are different types of residential roofing underlayment, and they offer varying levels of protection. Here are some of the most common types of underlayment:

Asphalt-Saturated Felt

This underlayment used to be the industry standard before synthetic materials became more common. However, it is still used today in many homes. Made with either organic or fiberglass substrates, this underlayment is ideal for most standard pitched roofs. Though they are outclassed by most other forms of underlayment when it comes to water resistance, they are easy to install and find, making them the most affordable choice.

Non-Bitumen Synthetic Underlayment

This type of underlayment is a synthetic upgraded version of asphalt-saturated felt. It has better water resistance and lighter weight. This material can be applied to cover your entire roofing system, so it can be cost-effective too. Unlike its predecessor, it’s not made of asphalt but of polyethylene or polypropylene polymers.

Rubberized Asphalt Underlayment

Rubberized asphalt underlayment is currently one of the best types of underlayment on the market. Because its composition is made with a higher percentage of asphalt and rubber polymers, this underlayment is waterproof. It is also made with a sticky back with a protective membrane, creating a watertight seal between the underlayment and the roof decking. It is superior to most types of underlayment, so it usually comes with a high price.
