Samuel Spencer Johnson

Samuel was an Oregon-based American businessman, lawmaker, and philanthropist. Near the Metolius River, Black Butte, and Sisters, Oregon, he owned sawmills and extensive tracts of timberland. He was a member of the Oregon House of Representatives for seven terms and co-founded the Samuel S. Johnson Foundation with his wife. From 1979 until 1984, he was the mayor of Redmond, Oregon. Johnson was born in Berkeley, California, in September 1911. He was named after his grandfather, a Minnesota sawmill owner. Samuel Orie Johnson, his father, was a timber dealer in California. His father went to Central Oregon in 1903 and began purchasing timber acreage in the area. His father purchased the Wurzweiller Ranch, which comprised Camp Sherman and the Metolius River’s headwaters, as well as the Black Butte Ranch, the Indian Ford area near Sisters, and the majority of Green Ridge north of Black Butte.

Denton Graves Burdick

Denton was an attorney and politician from the state of Oregon in the United States. He was a Republican who represented a largely rural district in eastern Oregon in the Oregon House of Representatives for fourteen years. During the 1925 legislative session, he was the Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives. He was the youngest person in Oregon history to be chosen speaker at the time he was elected. Burdick came to Central Oregon with his father in 1912 because his father had ongoing business interests there. He established a law firm in Redmond, Oregon, and partnered with his father in a number of banking and land development ventures. He married Zoa Mae Bronson of Spencer, Iowa, in 1913. He became a municipal police magistrate in Redmond the following year, a position he held until 1917.

Bus Boyk

Boyk was born in Everett, Washington, on October 14, 1917. He was a member of the Cascade Hillbillies and the Rancho Serenaders in the 1930s. He was a member of the Sons of the Golden West from 1953 to 1964. Later, he toured with Ray Price and recorded with him. He also played with the Yeary Brothers, Roy Jackson, and the Northwesterners, Ranch Dressing, Cal Shrum and his Rhythm Rangers, Everything’s Jake, and the Fiddle Summit over his long career. He retired in the 1980s, but in 1999, he placed fifth in the National Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest in Weiser, Idaho. He was inducted into the Pioneers of Western Swing Hall of Fame of the Western Swing Society and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. Boyk died in Redmond, Oregon, on April 26, 2010.
