Effective Ways to Make Your Roof Last Longer at Home

Everyone who owns a residential or commercial property will want to make sure the roof stays in the best possible condition. The roof is often overlooked by plenty of homeowners and it can be a cause for lots of concern if left unattended.

There are plenty of factors that take a toll on a roof – with the weather being the number one issue. All kinds of flaws can become apparent over the years, so it’s best to understand how you can protect it and make it last longer.

Here are a few effective tools to make this happen:

Think About The Ventilation

Badly-located attic soffits and vents are a huge cause of condensation on plywood. This plywood acts as the decking that supports the roof shingles overall. If it’s not protected, it can then lead to rotting. An exhaust fan usually helps with this kind of thing, but it will cause more problems if it is placed in an awkward position.

Effective Power Washing

While power washing seems like an excellent idea, it can actually cause plenty of damage. It’s worth avoiding if you want the quality of your home to remain. The same goes for the rest of the home, in all honesty. This kind of spray can result in the loosening of granules from the top coating. The damage may not then be covered by the warranty. If you want to clean your roof, it’s wise to bring in a professional who can manually remove dirt and moss.

Cleaning Gutters

Cleaning gutters will have a direct effect on the quality of the roof. In doing so, you’ll prevent a build-up of water that may then seep into the roof. Leaks will likely appear and cause further damage. It’s also wise to cut down any kind of vegetation that might brush against the roof and erode roofing materials.

Proper Roofing Insulation

If you insulate the home (and especially the roof area) properly, then you’re going to prevent ice dams and all kinds of costly leaks. Bringing in an experienced roofer will help out as they’ll be able to install a self-adhesive membrane. This will protect against the likes of ice and water on select areas of the roof.

Fortification

If you want to install a strong and durable roof, then it’s wise to fortify it with the right pieces. For the best results, installers will seal decking with special tape. They’ll then use ring-shank nails before locking down the roof’s edges with metal flashing.

Install Solar Panels

Solar panels will not only be useful in terms of energy and looking after the environment – they’ll also help out your roof. They won’t be installed by cutting into the roof and they’ll actually keep it protected for the entire time it is on top. It protects a roof from all kinds of weather phenomena and will allow cool air to flow throughout.
