Do Solar Panels Protect Your Roof From Damage

Over the course of the past few years, solar panels have become a very popular feature among homes and commercial properties. They have plenty of benefits and they will not be going out of fashion anytime soon.

There are plenty of questions around home solar panels, as you’d expect.

Questions around their effectiveness regarding the power and the potential damage they may cause to a roof. Perhaps they dish out the likes of water leaks or holes due to their position. If you’re thinking of purchasing some for your company or for your home, then you’ll want to know everything about them.

Here, we’re going to talk about how installing solar panels can positively affect your roof and even protect them.

Firstly, How Long Does Your Roof Last?

Before we get into the details of solar panels and the protection they provide, we’ll quickly run through the tenure a traditional roof has. The lifespans depend entirely on the kind of material the shingles are made from.

The length of time ranges from fifteen years all the way to sixty years – and sometimes even longer. Of course, how you treat the roof says a lot, too.

Asphalt shingles are your standard kind of roofing material. At most, they’ll be good for around thirty years. They could be as short as fifteen years, however. Composite shingles can last between twenty and fifty years. Modified shingles tend to have a life of around thirty years.

Wood shingles will be of use for about forty years at best. Clay will last for fifty – and so will metal and concrete. When it comes to copper roofs, you could be looking at well over sixty years.

The Cooling Roof Effects

Due to the fact that solar panels are on the roof, they will naturally keep them from the beam of the sun. They absorb light in order to produce power, but they also absorb in order to take the pressure away from the roof itself. They aren’t placed immediately on top – there is a small space in between the panel and roof for air to flow and to keep things cool.

Protection From Bad Weather

Snow, hail, and terrible winds can cause just as much damage as typical rainfall. Over many years, a roof can become extremely weathered and it can have a huge effect on its quality. Solar panels can act as a block from these kinds of conditions. While they won’t be an extremely defensive blockage, they’ll still do a great job. It would be wise to have them there in this case.

Potential Holes In The Roof from Solar

When installing solar panels, a lot of homeowners and property owners worry that they may cause further problems to an already damaged roof. That, or they’ll cause problems to a roof that had very few flaws in the first place. Fortunately, they’re installed in the correct manner which will see no damage or flaws caused. Some systems will bolt onto the rafters of the roof – a professional will be able to handle this. If done properly, there will be no leaks or problems of a similar ilk.
