The Tam-a-Lau Trail is a loop that is around 6.5 miles long and it winds its way up a lava plateau that is covered in desert scrub and boulders. The hiking path continues down the river canyon, providing vistas of the snow-capped Cascade Mountains and the shimmering lake below. We make a point of stopping at the petroglyphs so that we can be reminded of the people who inhabited this country long before we did. The neighboring Otter Bench Trail system offers multiple routes ranging from two to nine miles in length, each of which provides ample opportunities to take in the scenery of the Crooked River below.

We have a difficult time avoiding the trails that are located in and around Redmond. The terrain is in a state of perpetual change, and the usual is for there to be clear blue skies and sunshine. There are hiking trails that have difficult ascents as well as gentle paths, but regardless of which one you choose, the reward is a breathtaking view of the surrounding area.
